Session at the International Conference Old and New Worlds: the Global Challenges of Rural History Lisbon, 27-30 January 2016
The session aims to move away from the national and local focus which predominates in Rural History, at least among medieval historians. In this sense, we attempt not only to foster the overcoming of these perspectives in research-planning, and what is more, its transfer to research itself (how could we talk about, say, Spain, Belgium or the UK in the Middle Ages?), but also, and above all, to encourage communication, cooperation and discussion among medievalists from different countries and regions of Europe. At the same time, as the deceased S. R. Epstein used to propose, the region will be privileged as the more appropriate framework for analysis and observation, as well as a base for a necessary global, comparative history which, for the Middle Ages, can only make sense in a European context. Namely, the session intends to discuss the development of the Rural History of the Middle Ages in the last 25 years (1991-2015), that is, to explore the discipline’s most outstanding topics, achievements and fortresses, shortages and weaknesses, and how the history of the Middle Ages has fit into the wider frame of Economic History, paying attention particularly to Rural History, which has been moving progressively back in time the origins of economic growth. Whether one of the central topics of Rural History is economic growth and its repercussion, social inequality, such origins are not placed exclusively in modern times anymore, that is in the overcoming of feudalism – subsistence-oriented production, technical stagnation, locked economy and autarky –, but it can be localised right in the central centuries of the Middle Ages, due to the development of commercialisation and factor markets in the core of the feudal economy, much more dynamic than what it was thought.

Viejos y nuevos retos para la historia rural de la Edad Media
Siguiendo el empeño del congreso, esta sesión pretende alejarse del enfoque nacional y local predominante en la Historia Rural, al menos entre los medievalistas. En este sentido, se pretende no sólo fomentar la superación de tales perspectivas en la investigación (¿cómo se puede hablar de, por ejemplo, España, Bélgica o el Reino Unido en la Edad Media?), sino también, y sobre todo, estimular la comunicación, la cooperación y el debate entre los medievalistas de diferentes países y regiones de Europa. Al mismo tiempo, como solía proponer S.R. Epstein, la región será privilegiada como el marco más adecuado para el análisis y la observación, así como la base para una necesaria historia comparada global, que, para la Edad Media, sólo puede tener sentido en un contexto europeo. La sesión pretende principalmente examinar el desarrollo de la Historia Rural de la Edad Media en los últimos 25 años (1991-2015), es decir, explorar los temas más destacados de la disciplina, los logros y fortalezas pero también los vacíos y debilidades, y cuál ha sido el encaje de la historia de la Edad Media en el marco más amplio de la historia económica, prestando particular atención a la Historia Rural, que ha ido remontando progresivamente en el tiempo los orígenes del crecimiento económico. Si uno de los temas centrales de la Historia Rural es el crecimiento económico y su –¿inevitable?– corolario, la desigualdad social, tales orígenes no se sitúan exclusivamente en los tiempos modernos, es decir, en la superación del feudalismo –producción de subsistencia, estancamiento técnico, economía bloqueada y autarquía–, sino que se los puede encontrar ya en los siglos centrales de la Edad Media, debido al desarrollo de la comercialización y al funcionamiento de mercados de factores en el seno de la economía feudal, mucho más dinámica de lo que tradicionalmente se reconoce.
