Call for papers
for the cross-disciplinary conference:
Horses, moving

As beings with agency, horses move their own bodies and the bodies and material culture of humans, and can move humans in the sense of emotional engagements. Humans have been moved and enchanted by encounters
with horses at different times and at different places. Horses have been moving between different roles and different spheres of existence through history. Thus, there is fertile grounds for investigating human-horse relationships from the perspective of movement. The horse acts as a prism for illuminating a wide range of aspects of human-animal relationships, and as beings that help create sense of the world and the cosmological order.

The Museum of Archaeology, University of Stavanger and the Høgskulen for landbruk og bygdeutvikling would like to invite you to “Horses, moving”, a cross-disciplinary conference on the symbolism and relevance of horses in human societies throughout history, as well as the dynamics of human-horse interactions. The conference will take place at the Museum of Archaeology at September 25th-27th, 2018.

Keynote speakers are professor Lynda Birke, University of Chester, and professor Anita Maurstad, University of Tromsø.

We would like to invite prospective participants to submit abstracts outlining their topic. Presentations may come from any field, archaeology, anthropology, ethnography, human geography, history, linguistics, folklore studies, equine studies or animal behavioral studies, to name but a few. Abstracts should be no more than 300 words and must be submitted by June 30th, 2018.
For further information or to submit an abstract, please contact Sean Dexter Denham, phone: 0047 51 83 26 37, email: sean.d.denham@uis.no.
