Call for Papers:
Rural History 2019 Panel Proposal
Political implications of crop-failures and famines

We are a research group interested in putting together a proposed panel on the political implications of crop-failures and famines for the 2019 Rural History conference. We are interested in how such situations were dealt with practically and ideologically by those in power, but also how they were interpreted by the peasantry. Our hypothesis is that famines could be delicate situations for the ruling elites, challenging their role as patrons and protectors of the people. In addition bad harvests could be understood as a punishment from God. Our own research centres on 17-18th century Sweden, but also suggestions regarding other time periods are welcome.

Thanks,
Lars Nyström
