(Re)building the Alps?
100 years from the publication of “Die alpine Architektur” by Bruno Taut
Bruno Taut’s volume “Die alpine Architektur” was published in 1919. The book was written during the First World War, against a background of mass massacres and destruction.
By placing himself “above the fray”, Taut turned his gaze towards the mountains and their peaks as a free area in which to express the constructive and edifying potentialities of the human being where human community could reconcile.
Initially considered an extreme and hostile place for humans, Taut’s project was to gradually transform the Alps into an architectural and decorative playground; and the humanity would finally be free to transform the Alps into a house of the future.
The Mountains represented contemporaneously a sort of “diving board towards the stars” and towards infinite potential for transformation and construction.
“Die alpine Architektur”, in the intentions of its author, was oriented more towards a spiritual rather than an architectural progress, aimed at erasing the archetypal opposition between low and high, characteristic of Alpine symbolism, preserving only the top. The strength of Taut’s visions, addressed to the radical modification of the alpine natural environment, has been interpreted in different ways by the culture of the twentieth century, creating both “embarrassment” and contrast with the solid work of the working class architect.
A hundred years later, the book poses a series of huge problems, and involve many types of scholars. Here below some possible themes are proposed without excluding others:
1. How can the “visions” of Taut be understood from the point of view of a landscape designer, an environmentalist, an art historian, an architecture historian and an historian of the Alps?
2. Is it possible to interpret them simply as the outcome of the transformation processes of the alpine landscape, which were particularly violent in the nineteenth century (with the occurrence of mountaineering, elevators leading tourists to scenic places, Grand Hotels on the peaks, technologization of the Alps) and further aggravated in the twentieth century with the explosion of the skiing economy?
3. Shall the images of Taut be traced back to the antecedents represented by Violet-le-Duc and Hablik? To the French utopians or to the lesson of the “architect” Paul Scheerbart?
4. What links exist between the practical dimension of the projects presented by “Die alpine Architektur” and the utopian dimension of the projects of the 1920s?
5. What are the links with Gothic architecture and the “perception of the Alps as a gigantic cathedral”?
6. Are the “full” valleys of the 21st century to be related to the visions of Taut?
7. Do the projects of “Die Alpine Architektur” have an economic potential similar to that of Christo's achievements (The Floating Piers)? As Le Corbusier writes about the economic potential of the reconstruction of Paris’ town centre, does also Taut imagine he can produce wealth through construction?
8. What are the mountains according to Taut? A place of utopia or dystopia if the “consumption of land” and the “consumption of landscape” are brought to their extreme consequences?
9. What is the relationship between the views of “Die alpine Architektur” in which “the drawings of non-conventional free forms [and giant decorations] change the natural landscape as if they were allowed to invade the globe” and the admiration for “neatness” and the simplicity of Japanese architecture?
10. How can such a strongly colonizing vision of architecture be reconciled with the political positions of Taut and its life paths excluding him from Germany, the Soviet Union and see him forced to emigrate to Japan and Turkey?
The study days may be the moment to take stock of the situation of the studies dedicated to this interesting intellectual, architect and artist and will help to ask new and more stimulating questions about his work, even on that “dark side” that today appears so obvious.
The conference will be held at the Academy of Architecture in Mendrisio, on the 7th and 8th November 2019.
The deadline for submitting the proposals is set for 15th March 2019. The abstracts should clearly indicate: paper title; author/s of the paper; institutions of reference of the author; email address and phone number of the author.
Abstracts should not exceed 2,000 characters (including spaces).

(Ri)costruire le Alpi?
A 100 anni dalla pubblicazione di Die alpine Architektur di Bruno Taut
Nel 1919 veniva pubblicato il volume di Bruno Taut Die alpine Architektur. Il testo era stato composto durante la Prima guerra mondiale, avendo sullo sfondo gli eccidi di massa e le distruzioni determinate dal conflitto.
Ponendosi “al di sopra della mischia”, Taut volgeva il suo sguardo alle montagne e alle loro vette come un campo libero nel quale esprimere le potenzialità costruttive ed edificatorie dell’essere umano all’interno del quale la comunità umana avrebbe potuto riconciliarsi con se stessa.
Da luogo estremo e ostile alla presenza umana le Alpi si sarebbero trasformate nel terreno di gioco architettonico e decorativo di un’umanità finalmente libera di fare di esse una casa del futuro.
Ma le montagne rappresentavano al tempo stesso una sorta di “trampolino verso le stelle” e verso infinite potenzialità di trasformazione e di edificazione.
Die alpine Architektur, nelle intenzioni del suo autore, era teso verso una meta di progresso spirituale prima ancora che architettonico, volto a cancellare l’opposizione archetipica tra basso e alto caratteristica della simbologia alpina, lasciando intatto solo l’alto.
La potenza delle visioni di Taut, rivolte alla modifica radicale dell’ambiente naturale alpino è stata recepita in modi diversi dalla cultura del XX secolo creando ora “imbarazzo” ora contrasto con il solido lavoro del Taut architetto.
Acento anni di distanza il libro pone una serie di problemi che sono di una scala immensa, e interessano numerose tipologie di studiosi. Qui di seguito vengono proposte alcune tematiche possibili senza escluderne altre:
- Dal punto di vista del paesaggista, dello studioso dell’ecologia e dell’ambiente, dello storico dell’arte, dello storico dell’architettura e dello storico delle Alpi come possono essere inquadrate le “visioni” di Taut?
- È possibile leggerle semplicemente come l’esito dei processi di trasformazione del paesaggio alpino particolarmente violenti nel XIX secolo (con la nascita dell’alpinismo, gli ascensori per condurre i turisti in luoghi panoramici, i Grand Hotel sulle vette, la tecnologizzazione delle Alpi) e che verranno esasperati nel XX secolo con l’esplosione dell’economia dello sci?
- Le immagini di Taut si devono invece ricondurre, agli antecedenti rappresentati da Violet-le-Duc e Hablik? Agli utopisti francesi o alla lezione dell’“architetto” Paul Scheerbart?
- Quali legami esistono tra la dimensione pratica dei progetti presentati da Die alpine Architektur e la dimensione utopistica dei progetti degli anni Venti?
- Quali sono i legami con l’architettura gotica e la «percezione delle Alpi quale gigantesca cattedrale»?
- I fondovalle “pieni” del XXI secolo possono essere posti in relazione con le visioni di Taut?
- I progetti di Die alpine Architektur hanno potenzialità economiche simile a quella delle realizzazioni di Christo (The Floating Piers)? Come scrive Le Corbusier a proposito delle potenzialità economiche della riedificazione del centro di Parigi anche Taut immagina di poter produrre ricchezza attraverso l’edificazione?
- Nella visione di Taut le montagne che cosa sono? Il luogo dell’utopia o della distopia se il “consumo di territorio” e il “consumo di paesaggio” sono portati alle loro estreme conseguenze?
- Quali rapporti ci sono tra le vedute del Die alpine Architektur nelle quali «i disegni di forme libere non-convenzionali [e mastodontiche decorazioni] cambiano il paesaggio naturale come se fosse consentito loro di invadere il globo» e l’ammirazione per il “lindore” e la semplicità dell’architettura giapponese?
- Come si concilia una visione così fortemente colonizzatrice dell’architettura, con le posizioni politiche di Taut e i suoi percorsi di vita che lo estromettono dalla Germania, dall’Unione Sovietica e lo vedono costretto a emigrare in Giappone a in Turchia?
Le giornate di studio potranno essere il momento per fare il punto sulla situazione degli studi dedicati a questo interessante intellettuale, architetto e artista e contribuiranno a porre nuove e più stimolanti domande sul suo lavoro, anche su quel “lato oscuro” di esso che appare oggi così evidente.
Il convegno si terrà a Mendrisio, presso l’Accademia di architettura, nelle giornate del 7 e 8 novembre 2019.
Il termine per l’invio delle proposte è fissato il 15 marzo 2019. Gli abstract dovranno indicare chiaramente:
titolo di lavoro del paper; autore/i del paper; istituzioni di riferimento dell’autore; indirizzo mail e telefonico dell’autore. Gli abstract non dovranno superare le 2000 battute (spazi compresi).
