Agricultural History Society Graduate Workshop 2020:
Farming and Place
The Agricultural History Society invites applications for a one-day graduate student workshop to be held Wednesday, June 3, 2020 in Knoxville, TN. The workshop will run immediately in advance of the AHS Annual Meeting (June 3-6), also in Knoxville. Applicants for the workshop are strongly encouraged to apply to present their work at the Annual Meeting as well.
The workshop will be oriented around the theme of “Farming and Place.” Possible submissions might include studies that explore the relationship between agricultural activities and the specificities of particular cultural and physical landscapes; equally relevant would be scholarship that looks at the interrelationships between local practices and wider networks of exchanges. Participants might also submit papers exploring how farming has shaped cultural understandings of place. Research projects pertaining to any period and any geographic region are eligible, and graduate students working in history or affiliated disciplines with substantial historical components are welcomed.
Accepted papers will be pre-circulated, assigned a respondent from among a group of senior scholars, and given in-depth feedback during the workshop. Every accepted student will receive a $250 stipend to help cover the costs of attending. Workshop participants are also strongly encouraged to submit a paper or panel proposal to the AHS Annual Meeting; workshop participants who are also presenting at the regular conference will be eligible to apply for an additional $250 to defray travel expenses.
A panel of senior scholars will award the workshop’s outstanding paper a $500 prize, sponsored by the University of Tennessee.
