Call for Papers and Sessions:
Rural History Network of the ESSHC 2023

It has been four years already since the last ‘normal’ ESSHC in Belfast. In the meanwhile our lives and work have profoundly changed. Moreover, academic research did not stop, and many new scholars joined the field. Many young scholars who started their PhD or research project in 2019 or later, did hardly attend any ‘on-site’ international conference at all. And while on-line conferences and seminars have opened a whole new world of opportunities to meet with people, and exchange ideas and perspectives, the added value of presenting and discussing new research in a conference with so many specialists from all over Europe (and beyond) gathered during sessions, coffee breaks, excursions and diners, is obvious.

We want to encourage all rural historians to come to join us in Gothenburg, proposing papers and sessions. For this edition, we would like to encourage especially young researchers, to propose a session connected to the topic of their PhD or research project. Do you know people in other countries working on similar topics? Why not propose a session together? Four papers and an expert commentator are ideal. Alternatively, you can also approach us with your idea, and we can help you to look for rural historians in other countries. Single papers are also welcomed, we will try to arrange sessions as coherent as possible.

Note that every topic on Rural History, on every period and every region, is welcome. With about 100 participants in Rural History sessions during the last “normal” edition in Belfast and many more in adjacent fields (such as Economic History, Social Inequality, Labour…) ESSHC is an ideal venue to meet international colleagues in the field, to strengthen existing international collaborations between rural historians and establish new ones.

Session and paper proposals can be submitted through the conference website. Deadline for session and paper proposals is 15 April 2022.

How to propose a paper: Fill out the pre-registration form on the Internet: https://esshc.socialhistory.org/. Include an abstract of your paper (100-500 words).

How to organise a panel session: Gather four speakers who each will present a paper on a related topic, a commentator who will introduce the discussion with a prepared comment on the papers and a chair. The roles of the session organizer, chair and commentator can be fulfilled by the same or by different persons. Confirm participation and arrange with these individuals the (date of) exchange of papers and the way the session will be conducted. Submit the proposal for a session with a pre-registration form for each individual speaker (https://esshc.socialhistory.org/conference/user/pre-registration). The deadline for this is April 15, 2022. Contact the speakers regularly; to make sure that the preparation of the session is progressing, as you would want it to be.

If you want to organise a panel session and you are looking for contributors, you may think of using H-Rural for asking other scholars to join you in a session.

When you have any additional question about how to participate in the Rural History Network, please do not hesitate to contact Tim Soens (tim.soens@uantwerpen.be) or Alba Díaz Geada (alba.diaz@usc.es).
