Wheat, vines, and olive trees: transformations in the practice and representations of a Mediterranean triad
The journal Mutations en Méditerranée invites young researchers to send in their article proposals for its second issue, on the theme of the Mediterranean triad "Wheat, vines, and olive trees".
Imagine Herodotus travelling around the Mediterranean today, more than 2400 years after his voyages. Would he be surprised to see citrus fruits dotting the horizon? Would he be astonished to be served tomatoes? In 1940, Lucien Febvre retraced the evolution of Mediterranean agriculture from this multi-secular perspective. At the time, he may have been dreaming of an ancient Mediterranean world made up of nothing but wheat, vines and olive trees, even though it was already a hub of global agricultural trade. By sharing “the same granaries, the same cellars, the same oil mills” (Braudel 1966, p. 229), the Mediterranean has witnessed the evolution of this agricultural and alimentary triad and how it is depicted, alongside the transformation of related practices. The dialectical relationship between the practices and depictions of this triad changed as a result of the climatic, demographic, political and technical upheavals that have marked and continue to transform this area. Wheat, vines and olive trees are thus seen as the first step in the study of transformations of social practices and representations in the Mediterranean, at different spatial and temporal scales of analysis.
This call for contributions seeks to develop reflections on this Mediterranean triad, focusing on three dimensions:
- the land and the relationship with the land, from a productive, dietary and demographic point of view;
- the appropriation and dispossession of land;
- artistic practices as well as historically documented representations and imaginary constructions.
These dimensions should demonstrate both the unification and the fragmentation of Mediterranean areas. This call for contributions is open to proposals from PhD students from all disciplines; multidisciplinary contributions will be particularly welcome.
Submission requirements
Proposals for contributions should be between 2500 and 5000 characters (including spaces, excluding bibliography). They must contain a title, keywords and the bibliography used. Consult editorial norms.

Mutations en Méditerranée (MeM) is a multidisciplinary digital journal founded by PhD students of the Institut Sociétés en Mutation en Méditerranée (SoMuM) of Aix-Marseille Université.
It aims to open a publication space for young researchers. The journal publishes one online issue a year, with open access, and welcomes articles in French and English.

Blé, vigne, olivier : transformations des pratiques et des représentations d’une triade méditerranéenne
La revue académique Mutations en Méditerranée invite les jeunes chercheuses et jeunes chercheurs à envoyer leurs propositions d’articles pour son numéro 2 sur le thème de la triade méditerranéenne « Blé, vigne, olivier ».
Imaginons Hérodote parcourant aujourd’hui le pourtour de la Méditerranée plus de 2400 ans après ses voyages. Serait-il surpris de voir l’horizon ponctué d’agrumes ? Stupéfait de se voir servir des tomates ? C’est par le biais de ce point de vue multi-séculaire que Lucien Febvre retraçait en 1940 l’évolution de l’agriculture méditerranéenne. Peut-être rêvait-il alors d’une Méditerranée ancienne faite seulement de blé, de vignes et d’oliviers, alors qu’elle était déjà un carrefour de circulations agricoles mondiales. En partageant « les mêmes greniers, les mêmes celliers, les mêmes moulins à huile » (Braudel 1966, p. 229), la Méditerranée a vu l’évolution de cette triade tant agricole qu’alimentaire, la transformation tant des pratiques qui l’entourent que des représentations dont elle fait l’objet. La relation dialectique entre pratiques et représentations de cette triade a évolué sous l’effet des bouleversements climatiques, démographiques, politiques ou encore techniques qui ont marqué et continuent de transformer cet espace. Blé, vigne et olivier sont ainsi pensés comme des points d’entrée dans l’étude des transformations des pratiques et représentations sociales en Méditerranée, et ce, à différentes échelles d'analyses spatiales et temporelles.
Cet appel à contributions cherche à prolonger la réflexion à partir de cette triade méditerranéenne, selon trois dimensions :
- la terre et le rapport à la terre, d’un point de vue productif, alimentaire et démographique ;
- l’appropriation et la dépossession des sols ;
- les pratiques artistiques ainsi que les représentations historiquement documentées et constructions imaginaires.
Ces dimensions pourront démontrer tant l’unification que la fragmentation des espaces méditerranéens. Cet appel est ouvert à des propositions de jeunes chercheuses et chercheurs de toutes disciplines ; les contributions pluridisciplinaires seront particulièrement appréciées.

Les propositions de contributions doivent contenir entre 2500 et 5000 signes (espaces compris, hors bibliographie). Elles doivent contenir un titre, des mots-clés et la bibliographie utilisée. Elles sont acceptées en français ou en anglais. Consulter les normes éditoriales.
